• What is cancer?

Cancer is the general name for a group of diseases which affect the body’s cells. Although there are many different kinds of cancer, all cancers are caused by abnormal cells growing out of control.

  • Reducing your risk

Making some simple changes to your lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk of developing cancer. These are some of the most important choices you can make to reduce your cancer risk.

  • Screening

Regular cancer screening is important. Screening can detect certain cancers before you have any symptoms. Finding cancers early means that treatment is likely to work best.

In Northern Ireland, the Public Health Agency runs screening programmes for breast, cervical and bowel cancers. The aim of screening is to detect cancer at an early stage when treatment is more likely to be effective.

  • Cancer care

Many health professionals and organisations are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, care and support of those with cancer in Northern Ireland. The arrangement of cancer services can involve GPs, pharmacists, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, haematologists, oncologists, clinical nurse specialists, palliative care, researchers, the Northern Ireland Cancer network (NICaN) and cancer charities.
